Bremo Slave Chapel

Built in the 1700s by General James Cocke on his plantation on the banks of the James River in central Virginia, General Cocke risked imprisonment by providing a place of worship for his slaves and especially for teaching them to read and write.

This image took first place in the “History” category in a county sponsored photo contest a few years ago.
