Abandoned Steel Foundry, Bethleham, Pennsylvania

This is one of the few remaining foundry-casting buildings still standing from the now defunct Bethleham Steel Works in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. At one time almost 10 percent of the industrial steel produced in the entire world came from this plant. Today it stands a crumbling ruin–a melancholy testimony to America’s manufacturing past. This is the town Walker Evans photographed so extensively and obsessively in the 1930s.
